The Maltese-flagged Primadona carrying Romania, English and French tourists got stuck in sand on the Danube shore.

Veronica Constantin, spokeswoman for the Dolj county border police, said a police boat has been sent to help get the passengers off board and take them to Bucharest, from where they should continue on their journey to Malta.

Thursday night, another ship got stuck in sand in the same area but managed to set sail again Friday morning and reach the Calafat port.

Seventeen barge convoys carrying some 60,000 tons are also stuck along the Danube because of the river's low level. The river is just one meter deep between Turnu Magurele and Zimnicea and forecasts show the Danube's flow will continue to drop.
