Eighteen Arrested In Romania For Illegal Luxury Car Registrations

The suspects under arrest include three employees of the auto registry office RAR, one police officer and a riot police officer.

The suspects are accused of having fraudulently introduced 15 cars in Romania, stolen or rented from abroad. The cars were Audis, Mazdas, BMWs, Chryslers, Citroens, Opels, Volkswagens, Skodas, Mercedes Benz, Alfa Romeos, Nissans, Mitsubishis and Dacias.

Prosecutors say the cars were rented abroad from rent-a-car services and brought to Romania, where they got new, forged documents in view of registration. The car thieves had accomplices within Romanian license and registration departments and would later sell the cars.

The alleged criminal group has thus defrauded victims of over EUR200,000.
