European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker sent a message to the Romanian Government and Parliament during a speech in the EU Parliament on Tuesday, stating that the country needs consensus on the rule of law and the fight against corruption.

The official also said that this would be necessary so as to not affect the country’s hopes on acceding to the Schengen Area,
“July 15, 2014. Since then, I’ve been pleading for Romania to be a part of the Schengen Area and I wanted to obtain this before the end of this Commission’s term. I want to attract attention towards the Government and Parliament, you must not endanger this by distancing from the principles of the rule of law, and my wish is that before Romania’s EU Council presidency there will be a national consensus on the fight against corruption. Otherwise, the Commission will find it hard to agree on adopting specific recommendations regarding the Schengen Area,” Juncker said in the EU Parliament plenary.
The EU official otherwise praised Romania’s process of integration into the EU and its previous progresses in the fight against corruption, stating the country had the first initiative to launch an anticorruption agency “when others did not have the courage”.
The European Commission expressed numerous concerns in the past 18 months with different attempts of the country’s ruling coalition to amend judicial bills, and is due to address them in the upcoming Cooperation and Verification Mechanism report, scheduled to be published on November 13.
