The number of Romanian tourists who spent the New Year’s abroad was down 20% on the year, to 10,500 people who spent EUR5.75 million, down 13% from 2008.
Mountain resorts along the Prahova Valley continue to be Romania’s most popular resorts, with an occupancy rate of 95%, while other mountain resorts across the country saw an occupancy rate of 85%.
Nearly 25,000 tourists spent the New Year’s in hotels and restaurants in Romania’s big cities, while nearly 30,000 Romanians spent the New Year’s in rural areas. According to FPTR, rural tourism is the only segment that saw an increase in the number of tourists, compared with 2008.
The number of tourists who spent the New Year’s on the seaside was down 40% on the year, to 800 people, while nearly 16,000 people spent the winter holidays in various spa resorts countrywide, which translates into a 7% decrease from 2008.
Austria, Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, Egypt, France and Tunisia were the most popular foreign destinations among Romanians during the winter holidays.
