Only 3% Of Romanians Trust Govt’s Power To Fight Corruption – TI Study

According to the study, in 2009, 12% of Romanians reported paying bribes for various services, while this year their number tripled.

Moreover, only 2% of respondents believe that the 2010 corruption level is below that reported three years ago, while 87% of them said the corruption situation worsened this year.

Only 3% of Romanians trust in the Government's power to fight corruption, which places Romania on the last position in the European Union regarding the population's trust in the Executive.

Moreover, about two in three Romanians said they trust no public person or institution when it comes to fighting corruption. According to Transparency International Romania (TI-Ro) this fact shows Romania is by far the most disappointed European nation.

According to TI-Ro executive director Victor Alistar, about 70% of Romanians consider people should involve themselves in fighting corruption as they can make a difference. Eight in ten Romanians would support colleagues or friends in their attempt to fight corruption, and six in ten respondents would take a stand against corruption themselves.

Regarding the perception on corruption in key public institutions, Romanians consider that political parties, the Parliament and the justice system are the most corrupted institutions.

According to the study, the Church is considered to be the least corrupted structure, but the level of corruption among clergymen increased to 2.3 points, from less than 2 points over the past years.
