Railway Traffic In Romania Resumed As Workers End Protest

Railway traffic is expected to return to normal Wednesday afternoon.

The warning strike has caused an estimated 100 million lei (EUR1=RON4.1865) loss to the state owned passenger railway company CFR, according to the company's management.

The company said 382 trains are affected by the strike and railway traffic should return to normal in the afternoon.

Trains were halted between 7 and 9 a.m. as unionists and railway company representatives failed to find common ground and sign new collective work contracts.

The seven-hour negotiations held Tuesday failed to convince railway unionists to give up their plan to stage a warning strike, said union federation leader Gheorghe Fratica.

Fratica said last week railway workers would stage a warning strike discontent they have not signed new collective work contracts. He added the warning strike may be called off if contracts are signed by March 16.

Also Wednesday, the country's major trade union federations are expected to stage an ample rally in capital Bucharest, as the Government faces a new vote of no-confidence in Parliament over new labor legislation.
