Reelected Romanian President Basescu Vows To Oppose Oligarchization

The excessive influence of financial interest groups over politicians and state institutions is a threat to democracy and the rule of law, said Basescu in a speech before Parliament, after being reinvested.

Basescu said that in a democracy everyone's interest must be represented, and the representation of certain groups to the detriment of the majority's interest is unacceptable.

Basescu said he would be the "partisan of authentic democracy" and the "adversary of any attempt to turn Romania into an oligarchy."
