Union leader Marin Florian said the 1,000 protesters started their demonstration at the shipyard's headquarters and left for the center of town in a march.

Florian said he will also address the Romanian MEPs and call on them to have the problem presented in the European Parliament.

About one third of the shipyard's 3,000 employees went on general strike indefinitely on October 11. They demand a 300 lei (EUR1=RON4.3126) salary increase and a new collective work contract to be valid until the end of 2011.

Unionists decided to resume general strike after the Constanta Court ruled it illegal this June. Unionists appealed the court's decision and on September 23 the Constanta Court of Appeals ruled in favor of protesters.

Daewoo - Mangalia Heavy Industries spokesman Gemal Memetcea said last week the employees' decision to go on general strike is "a bit irrational" taking into account the current economic context, adding the company cannot increase their wages.
