Romania Might Have Political-Majority Government With Technocratic PM - Sources

Lucian Croitoru, adviser to the central bank governor, Mihai Tanasescu, Romania's representative to the IMF, Romanian Intelligence Service head Cristian Marior and Foreign Intelligence Service head Mihai Razvan Ungureanu are some of the names considered for new prime minister.

People close to the matter told MEDIAFAX a decision on appointing a technocratic prime minister will be taken after talks between the head of state and parliamentary parties, scheduled for Monday.

Romania will have a political-majority Government, with technocrats running key ministries. The ruling coalition might also be reconfigured.

Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc announced earlier Monday he is stepping down, after weeks of political turmoil and social unrest.

The prime minister said he decided the Cabinet should step down to defuse the mounting social and political tensions in the country and to avoid jeopardizing the country's economic stability, achieved through harsh austerity measures.

Boc called on the country's political class to ensure the Parliament endorses a new Government as soon as possible and thanked President Traian Basescu and former and current Cabinet ministers for their collaboration "in serving public interests."
