The Romanian head of state pointed out that a military intervention in the North African country at this point in time could be "a major political error".
Basescu said that imposing a no fly zone over Libya requires an analysis of the necessity to intervene in the area, a UN Security Council resolution, as well as the agreement of Arab states. He highlighted that such an intervention needs to be supported by the Arab League and African Union.
The president added that the enforcement of a no fly zone in Libya is a mission to be assumed by NATO, not by the European Union.
Basescu attended the extraordinary meeting of the European Council Friday in Brussels, which featured talks on the political situation in Libya. The summit was called for by EU Council president Herman Van Rompuy, following the political situation in Libya, and states in the southern vicinity of the European Union.
