The new Code says unlawful interception of a private conversation, or surveillance of private life, through any means, are considered violations of privacy. The Code also protects personality rights.
Missing people may be declared legally dead after two years, or after six months if the person went missing under special circumstances (flood, earthquake, rail/air disaster, shipwreck, war), or even earlier if there is significant evidence of death, despite no body being found.
The new Civil Code forbids same-sex marriages. Also, civil partnerships signed abroad between heterosexual or same-sex couples, whether they are Romanians or not, are not recognized in Romania.
Minors who turned 16 can get married with the permission of their parents or legal guardians.
Marriage between teenagers and their legal guardians is forbidden, as well as marriage between relatives.
Engagement is not a condition for marriage and does not entail signing any official document.
The person who abusively breaks off the engagement may be forced to pay wedding planning costs. The person who is responsible for breaking the engagement may be forced to pay damages.
