Basescu stressed that, unfortunately, the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) is considered a Schengen accession condition.

"I take political responsibility for the delay of Romania's accession to the Schengen Area, as I am the head of state and somebody must take this responsibility," said Basescu.

The president said it is "obvious" that "our big problems" concern the justice system and everybody must take responsibility.
