Romania To Contribute EUR25.28M To NATO's Allied Ground Surveillance System

Romania will participate in NATO's Allied Ground Surveillance (AGS) system, along with 12 other member states, with a contribution of EUR25.28 million or 2% of the total cost, the Foreign Ministry informs.

Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Norway, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and the United States will participate in the procurement of unmanned drones and other equipment such as deployable ground stations that will support AGS.

The Global Hawk-model drones, built by American firm Northrop Grumman, will cost around EUR1 billion, and the allies will spend an additional EUR2 billion on maintenance and operating costs. Romania's contribution will be paid in installments until 2016, the Ministry said.

The AGS system is expected to become fully operational in 2017.
