Romania To Criminalize DUI With 0.05% Blood Alcohol Content

The legal limit at which driving under the influence in Romania becomes a criminal offense (from a less serious contravention) will be reduced from 0.08% to 0.05%, as per an amendment to the Traffic Code, approved by the Chamber of Deputies committee for legal matters.

Traffic Police Chief Lucian Dinita told MEDIAFAX this change is a consequence of the number of traffic incidents associated with alcohol or drug consumption, as well as an attempt to align with European standards.

According to Dinita, 487 amendments have been put forward for the bill amending the Traffic Code, including harsher penalties for speeding, DUI or aggressive driving.
