Romanian Cable TV Providers Not Required To Carry Private Stations - Bill

Article 82 of the current Law concerns the "must-carry" principle, which requires cable providers to broadcast every station run by the public television company (SRTv), the stations which are the subject of international agreements (TV5) and other free stations, according to their yearly ratings. It also says cable operators must provide local and regional stations, where they exist.

To abide by article 82, providers must offer the stations run by SRTv (TVR 1, TVR 2, TVR 3, TVR Cultural, TVR Info, TVR's local stations in Cluj, Craiova, Iasi, Targu Mures and Timisoara); the stations made available through international agreements (TV5); free stations, according to the yearly ratings (Pro TV, Antena 1, Realitatea TV, Kanal D, Prima TV, Antena 3, OTV, National TV, Taraf TV, Favorit TV, Kiss TV, N24 Plus, U, Mynele TV, DDTV, Trinitas TV, Music Channel, TV Neptun, Alfa Omega TV, Party TV, The Money Channel, TVRM Educational, Speranta TV, Canal Teleshop and Alpha TV).

The bill, put forward by deputies Raluca Turcan, Cezar Preda, Doinita Chircu and Brindusa Novac, changes the "must carry" rule and no longer requires cable providers to offer commercial stations. They must still provide two regional stations and two local stations, where they exist, as well as two radio stations.
