Romanian Drivers Required To Use Snow Tires In Winter - Draft

In November, Transport Minister Anca Boagiu presented a draft act whereby all drivers would be required to use snow tires. This rule was later to apply only to professional transporters.

The new draft says drivers of vehicles without snow tires during the winter will be given 9 to 20 penalty points, a fine and their car's registration certificate may be confiscated.

According to the act, the state could earn EUR445 million from VAT collections, while outfitting the car fleet of state institutions with such tires would cost around EUR28 million.

Boagiu said last year that drivers who cause accidents or block streets because their cars are not properly equipped will be fined and liable to pay road-clearing costs if they get snowed in. She said insurers will not cover car accident claims in the case of improperly equipped cars.
