Romania’s Foreign Minister-designate Theodor Baconschi told lawmakers in a hearing Tuesday try he will try to resume Romania’s bilateral relation with Russia, adding Romania cannot ignore Russia, just as Russia cannot the fact that Romania is the EU and NATO’s eastern border.

"Let's do business, let's make investments and regain markets," Baconschi said, adding Russia is a major player on the international scene.
"Bilaterally, I will do everything reasonably possible to relaunch this extremely important relationship. We cannot ignore Russia and Russia cannot ignore the fact that Romania is both NATO and the European Union's eastern border," Baconschi said.
The foreign minister-designate also said Romania needs to have a good relationship with Ukraine. He said Romania backs Ukraine in its aspiration to join NATO and the country should aspire to join the European Union.
Romania's Parliament committees for foreign policy and European affairs Tuesday endorsed proposed Foreign Affairs Minister Theodor Baconschi with 33 to 15 votes and one abstention.
Baconschi, an independent, has been proposed for foreign minister after previously serving as state secretary, ambassador to the Vatican, Portugal and France and then as presidential adviser.
As ambassador to Paris, Baconschi is credited with garnering France's support for Romania's EU commissioner nomination. Romanian Dacian Ciolos has been nominated European Commissioner for Agriculture in the future European Commission.
Prime Minister-designate Emil Boc will seek Wednesday a confidence vote for a Cabinet of 15 ministers and a deputy prime minister.
