Government spokeswoman Ioana Muntean said the agreement does not violate the personal freedom of Internet users.
Representatives of the European Union and 22 of its member states signed on Thursday, in Tokyo, the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, which will not enter force without the European Parliament's approval.
The purpose of the agreement (between the EU, the USA, Australia, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea and Switzerland) is, according to the European Parliament, to strengthen intellectual property rights and fight counterfeiting and piracy of goods such as designer clothing, music and films.
Social Democratic Party president Victor Ponta said Romania should not have signed ACTA until it had guarantees that privacy and the protection of personal data were not threatened, and pointed out that a possible government led by the Social-Liberal Union would cancel the agreement.
