Romanian Lower Chamber Rejects Opposition Request For Committee On Pension Bill Vote

Calin Popescu Tariceanu, leader of the Liberal Party's deputies group, presented a list of signatures of liberal, social democrat and conservative MPs. The opposition parties accuse Chamber Speaker Roberta Anastase and secretary Sever Voinescu of "defrauding" the vote on the pension bill, arguing that video footage of the session shows the bill was adopted without the necessary quorum.

The opposition has challenged the bill before the Constitutional Court, with a ruling expected on October 6.

The social democrats have filed a criminal complaint against the Anastase. Opposition parties have also threatened to trigger procedures to suspend the head of state from his position if he passes the bill, the final step for it to become law.
