Romanian PM Says New Labor Laws Don’t Repeal Collective Work Contracts

"That means the law on collective work contracts remains in effect, it is not repealed by the Labor Code, and the issue of work contracts will be regulated through a special law," Boc said.

Boc also said Monday the ruling coalition has agreed the Government should seek a confidence vote in Parliament to pass new labor legislation. He said the ruling coalition's lawmakers will be consulted on the matter before a final decision is made.

The latest draft of the code, obtained and presented Thursday by MEDIAFAX, eliminates all mentions of the single national collective labor contract and sets the probationary employment period at no longer than 90 calendar days, for both regular and management positions.

The labor unions oppose eliminating collective work contracts from the Code, arguing that terms such as working hours, conditions and minimum wage shall be abolished and workers might end up being paid less than they are worth.

Romania's five major trade unions said they would decide on protests against the new Labor Code Monday.
