Romanian prominent politician Ion Diaconescu, a former leader of the Christian Democratic People’s Party, has died Tuesday evening at the age of 94.

Diaconescu had been a member of the party since 1936 and was a political prisoner between 1947 and 1964, during the communist regime.

Diaconescu had been recently treated for heart problems.
