Romanian President Hasn't Yet Received Two Hot-Button Bills

The head of state couldn't say whether he will promulgate the two laws, adding they have not yet been sent to him.

Basescu highlighted that the information he has so far on the bills comes only from the mass media.

Romania's Chamber of Deputies adopted Tuesday two bills, one setting the value added tax on basic foods, such as bread, milk, meat, sugar and vegetable oil, at 5% instead of 24%, and another exempting pensions lower than 2,000 lei (EUR1=RON4.2940) from income taxes. Both bills had been previously rejected by the Senate, and the lower house had the final say before they are to be sent to the head of state for promulgation.

Prime Minister Emil Boc, who is also the head of the ruling Democratic Liberal Party, said the party's lawmakers made a huge mistake and now await the head of state's decision on the two bills.

Romania's Government raised the value added tax from 19% to 24% in July, in a bid to boost budget revenue.
