Romanian President Says He Must Promote Constitution’s Revision In 2011

Romanian President Traian Basescu said that, in 2011, he will have to promote the propositions revising the Constitution, and added the relation between state institutions must be clarified in order to prevent the abuse of power.

The head of state said the Constitution's revision is not aimed to change the system, but implement the results of the national referendum held on November 21, 2009, when Romanians voted for a single-chamber Parliament with 300 lawmakers.

Basescu stressed that the Constitution also includes provisions that must be clarified. The president said the provisions on suspending the president must not be removed, and highlighted political responsibility is required.

Romanians were polled in a national referendum on November 21, 2009 and the majority voted to make the country's Parliament single-chamber and reduce the number of lawmakers to maximum 300 from the current 471.
