Romanian President Traian Basescu said Wednesday he still considers that the number of state employees should be gradually reduced to 900,000 and stressed that the reduction might also be achieved through layoffs.

Romanian President Says No. Of State Employees Must Still Be Reduced, Layoffs To Continue

The head of state told ministers during Wednesday's Government meeting that layoffs must continue in order to create a "flexible state."

Basescu said Saturday that Romania had 1,270,000 state employees at the end of 2010. He pointed out that their number must be reduced to 900,000 in the next two or three years.
