Romania’s tax authority ANAF has fired 1,716 employees and closed 141 local tax collection offices during a restructuring process, agency head Sorin Blejnar said Thursday.

Of the laid off staff, 745 employees worked for public finance departments, 337 with the Financial Guard and 634 with the National Customs Authority.

Blejnar said the restructuring underway at the tax agency would save the state budget 41 million lei (nearly EUR10 million) by the end of the year.
