Three Women Stabbed In W Romania, Suspect Detained

Three women were stabbed Tuesday at different times in Timisoara, western Romania, and police have detained a man suspected of having committed the third stabbing, who also claims responsibility for the other two.

The suspect said he carried out the assaults after a fight with his girlfriend, according to one of the officers who apprehended him.

The first woman was stabbed in the abdomen Tuesday at noon, while the others were attacked later in the day. The victims were taken to the Timisoara City Hospital and are receiving care.

The suspect, Aurel M., 32, was apprehended shortly after the third assault. According to Timis County Police spokeswoman Madalina Mezdrea, he was convicted of murder in 2001 in Suceava, northern Romania, and sentenced to ten years and six months in prison. He was released on December 28, 2010.

Police initially believed different individuals had committed the first and second assault.
