Up to 750,000 Romanian State Employees Could Have Wages Raised

Mocanu said at a conference organized by the National Union Bloc that the Government is looking into ways to increase low wages and is considering various options. The state secretary pointed out that authorities have not yet arrived at a decision regarding this matter.
"Sanitas" union federation vice-president Adrian Barea said Friday, after talks at the Labor Ministry, that Government officials proposed increasing low public sector salaries up to RON850, but make the 25% slash introduced in June permanent through a new public wage law.
According to Barea, salaries lower than RON600 could be raised to RON810, RON840 or RON850. At the same time, however, the Government would keep the 25% slash through 2011, through a new wage law.
The unions say it is unacceptable for the new law to build on the reduced salary level, arguing that the Constitutional Court said this measure would only be in effect for six months.
