Italian president Giorgio Napolitano promulgated Thursday evening the decree allowing the deportation of European citizens that are considered a threat to public safety. The normative act allows Italian prefects to banish an EU citizen who is considered dangerous to public order.
The decree was urgently adopted by the Italian government Wednesday evening after a Romanian citizen is said to have brutally assaulted an Italian woman in Rome. The victim struggled nine days in a coma and died on Thursday.
On Friday, Milan prefect Gian Valerio Lombardi repatriated the first four Romanians, who arrived in the country Friday night.
