“The Italian Government, as well as the Romanian one, have major responsibilities in the situation created. For this reason, I ask the institution of the Romanian state and the Romanian Government to take on their due responsibilities and to guarantee the good cooperation with the Italian institutions and with the Italian Government,” said Basescu.
In the speech held Sunday at his office, Basescu referred to the illegal camps at the outskirts of major European cities – especially those in Italy, stating that this is not a new phenomenon, and camps had been there before Romania’s accession to the EU.
“Their existence is mainly a consequence of the policies applied by the host countries, including local authorities,” said Basescu.
Addressing the statements made by Italian political figures, Basescu said that “a responsible political figure cannot select the parts that suit them” ignoring the entire truth.
According to him “the enactment of hasty measures might lead to confusion and injustice."
“The crimes are unforgivable, but abuse is also humiliating and unacceptable. Improvised measures, leading to fear and triggering hatred can be unfair and they might have effects opposite to the ones expected,” added Basescu.
