The price of bread in Romania will continue to grow, as producers that haven’t raised prices yet, will do so, said Wednesday Aurel Popescu, head of the Rompan milling and bakery employers’ association.

"Producers that have not increased bread prices so far will hike them by yearend. On the other hand, we don’t estimate to see any more hikes from December 1 to January 20. (…) We’re starting 2008 on the wrong foot, with very expensive wheat, that will force us to impose high bread prices and that will lead to lower sales," Popescu said at the presentation of the Europain international fair to take place in Paris next year.

Producers announced late this summer they would hike bread prices due to high costs for raw materials and utilities. Wheat prices have grown on the local market this year as a severe drought damaged crops extensively. Wheat prices also went up in Europe and the world market.

Romania’s wheat crop for 2007 is of some 3 million tons, compared to 5.2 million tons in 2006.
