Romanian President Opens Hotline – Paper

Romania’s president Traian Basescu launched, as promised, communication media alternative to the press, and opened a hotline, daily "Gandul" reported.

The president himself answers calls at 031.620.62.00. Well, and answering machine with the president’s recorded voice, saying: "Hello. This is Traian Basescu, president of Romania. Come help us clean up! I have chosen this mode of communication because I want you to know directly from me why we need a referendum to introduce uninominal voting. These are things that regard you personally and that influence your life.”
 
After this introduction, Basescu gives instructions: "Press one to learn about uninominal voting. Press 2 to learn why the referendum on Nov. 25 is important to you. Press 3 to learn what is in your power to do and press four to learn about European Parliament elections, that take place on the same day as the referendum. If you want to leave a message, please press 5".
 
The president’s message does not mention whether the call is free or not, but it seems calls are taxed, the paper added.
 
Thursday evening, the Democratic Party sent text messages to journalists with the contents: "If you’re not already sleeping, call 0316206200! This is not a joke, it’s news.”
