Romanian Liberals Back Chamber Speaker Over Recent Scandal

Crin Antonescu, leader of Romania’s National Liberal party, or PNL, said Saturday that his party will not punish liberal Chamber speaker Bogdan Olteanu over his recent statements regarding US Ambassador to Bucharest Nicholas Taubman, stressing that the liberals’ ”target” is to reestablish the relations with the United State.

“The Liberal Party has never punished any of its members over some statements, but this is not the issue. However, the Liberal Party must try to reestablish the relations with the United States,” said Crin Antonescu.
Antonescu cared to point out that Taubman is not so well-informed on the amendments to the Criminal and the Criminal Procedure Codes adopted by the Romanian Parliament.
On Thursday, Taubman said Romania’s proposed amendments to the Criminal and Criminal Procedure Codes are worrisome for both the country and friends of the country.
Taubman added this is not just his own view, as numerous Romanian and international experts have expressed concern that the proposed amendments, if enacted in law, would represent a real setback in Romania’s efforts to fight many types of serious crime and corruption.

Following Taubman’s statements, Olteanu retorted that the US ambasaddor obtained his mandate in a manner that would be dubbed “corruption” in Romania, adding that „in Romania, legislation is made by Romanians.”
