Romanian Pres Proposes Ex Foreign Min To Run Foreign Intelligence Service

Romania’s President Traian Basescu submitted Monday morning to the Parliament’s speakers his proposal to appoint Mihai Razvan Ungureanu as head of the Romanian Foreign Intelligence Service, or SIE.

“Romania’s President Traian Basescu submitted today, November 26, to the speakers of the Chamber of Deputies and Senate, based on art.65 lit. h of Romania’s Constitution,  the proposal to appoint Mihai Razvan Ungureanu as director of the Romanian Intelligence Service," the Presidential Administration said in a press statement.
 
According to art. 65, section. 2 lit. h of the Constitution, the Parliament’s Chambers also work in joint sessions to appoint, at the Romanian President’s proposal, the heads of the intelligence services and supervise the activity of these services.
 
Ungureanu currently holds the position of Romania’s representative at the Southeast European Cooperative Initiative, or SECI. During December 2004 –February 2007, Ungureanu filed the position of foreign affairs minister.
