Other "best European director" nominees included Fatih Akin, with "Auf der anderen seite" ("The Edge of Heaven"), Roy Andersson, with "Du Levande" (You, The Living), Stephen Frears with "The Queen", Kevin Macdonald with "The last king of Scotland" and Giuseppe Tornatore, with "La sconosciuta" (The stranger).
The film "4 luni, 3 săptămâni şi 2 zile" (4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days) competed for the grand prize with another five productions: "Auf der anderen seite," "The Last King of Scotland,"La Vie en Rose" ("La mome"), by Olivier Dahan, "Persepolis", by Marjane Satrapi & Vincent Paronnaud and "The Queen," directed by Stephen Frears.
Cristian Mungiu adds these awards to his track record of prestigious awards, including Palme d’Or in Cannes, FIPRESCI Grand Prize for best film of the year, the award for best film in the Stockholm Festival etc.
In 2006, the “best European director” award went to Pedro Almodovar for his "Volver".
