“We’ve assumed the responsibility of ensuring financing to resume educational programs allowing African students to study and obtain PhDs in Romania,” Basescu told a news conference.
Basescu said Romania offers 35 such scholarships for African states this year, and in 2008 it will grant EUR1 million for 120 scholarships. He added assistance for education granted to African states would increase gradually.
Basescu also said this financial aid is part of Romania’s commitments as a member of the European Union.
“I would like to say note this, to avoid revolted voices saying we give money to the Africans to the detriment of Romanians. This is a commitment we made as a EU member. Romania also benefits from such assistance from countries outside the EU, such as Norway, and there is a large difference between the EUR1 million we grant Africa and the EUR98 million Norway gives Romania,” Basescu explained.
