According to EC statistics analyzed by marketing agency Perceptum, 7% of the turnover of Romanian companies (except for companies operating in the financial sector) was generated by online sales. Only Bulgaria, Cyprus (with 4% each) and Greece (6%) registered lower shares.

“The data from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, show that, in Romania, e-commerce is still far from its potential, both from the perspective of buyers and retailers,” said Raluca Ghilea, Perceptum CEO.

Only 3% of Romanian online shoppers reported fraud-related issues. Moreover, 68% of buyers said they faced no problem, 17% complained about the slower delivery time, while 13% reported technical issues during payment or purchase.

Two thirds of internet users in the EU shopped online in 2016, up 15% compared with 2007. The share of e-shoppers in internet users is growing, with the highest proportions being found in the 16-24 and 25-54 age groups (68 % and 69 % respectively).
