Eurostat: Four in 10 Romanians at Risk of Poverty or Social Exclusion

Nearly four in ten Romanians (38.8%) were at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2016, according to a Eurostat report released Monday.

The most vulnerable age group are people under 18, where the at-risk of poverty rate stands at 49.2%.

By sexes, 39.8% of women and 37.8% of men in Romania are at risk of poverty or social exclusion. Among people over 65, 34% are at risk, as are 73.5% of jobless persons and 42.5% of parents.

In the European Union, Romania, Bulgaria (40.4%), and Greece (35.6%) are the countries where more than a third of the population is at risk of poverty. At the opposite end, the lowest share of persons at risk of poverty or social exclusion were in the Czech Republic (13.3%), Finland (16.6%), Denmark (16.7%), and the Netherlands (16.8%).
