In an interview for German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung, Weber said that he will avoid granting offices which require political responsibility to members of far-right populist parties, such Germany’s AfD or the French National Front.
The EPP leader added that he is expecting to see the same attitude against populist from Timmermans, accusing him of not proposing any sanctions for PSD or the Maltese ruling party.
“I am expecting to see the same distancing from populists on part of social democrat candidate Frans Timmermans. I don’t see him pointing fingers at Romanian social-democrats, who are close to partially legalizing corruption (…) He must decide, but if he does not act with clarity in favor of the rule of law he will lose his credibility,” the German politician said.
EPP decided earlier this week to suspend the membership of Hungarian ruling party Fidesz, following accusations of internal measures which weakened the rule of law in the country.
