Social-Democrats File No-Confidence Motion Against Finance Minister

The Social Democrat Party’s (PSD) group in Romania’s Senate filed on Monday a no-confidence motion against liberal Finance Minister Florin Citu, accusing him and the government of not taking measures to stop the depreciation of the national currency versus the euro.

The motion was announced by former finance minister and long-time public rival of Citu, Eugen Teodorovici.

In the motion, the social-democrats state that “the only certainty” following investiture of the Ludovic Orban government with Florin Citu as finance minister is the fact that the national currency, the RON, has shown a constant downward trend in exchange rates against the Euro and the US dollar.

The document also calls for the finance minister’s resignation.

The motion is non-binding, meaning that the minister is not forced to resign should it pass. It will be voted only in the Senate.
