"Inspectors went to the airport and the headquarters of the airlines after media reports about several passengers stuck on the Otopeni international airport following flight cancellations and delays. No complaints were filed with the consumer protection offices in Bucharest, but passengers probably couldn’t file complaints, as they were in the airport, waiting to board their flights. We expect to register complaints in the upcoming days," people with the consumer authority told MEDIAFAX Friday.

European regulations stipulate that in case a flight is cancelled, the airliner must assist passengers. Passengers must be compensated, unless they are informed of the cancellation at least two weeks before.

Passengers are compensated EUR250 for all flights of 1,500 kilometers or less, EUR400 for all flights longer between 1,500 – 3,500 km, and EUR600 for all other flights.

In the event of delays, airliners must offer passengers food and beverages, depending on the duration of the delay, and even accommodation.
Passengers also have the right to make two free phone calls and free telex, fax or e-mail messages.

Thus, depending on the case, fines applicable range from RON300 to RON2,500 and are levied on the airliner for each passenger that has not benefited from the airliner’s legal obligations.
