Romania’s Ctrl Bk Maintains Inflation Target – Ctrl Bkr

The Romanian central bank will take any measure, including a new hike in the main rate, to strengthen the monetary policy and reach the inflation target, depending also on the market’s response to the last two hikes in the main rate, central bank Deputy Governor Eugen Dijmarescu stated Tuesday.

He added that the central bank maintains its target, and with a good year in agriculture, the inflation is very likely to return within the targeted limits.
At the end of 2007, inflation climbed to 6.57%, 1.5 percentage points above the central bank target, when consumer price index hiked by 0.64% in the last month of the previous year, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
The central bank set for 2007 an inflation target of 4%, plus/minus one percentage point, the target for this year being 3.8%, with the same variation margin.
In the latest report on inflation in November, the central bank reevaluated its inflation forecast for 2008 at 4.3%, after adding 0.6 percentage points.
