Romanian Ex PM Willing To Run For Presidency

Adrian Nastase, former Prime Minister as well as former head of Romania’s leftist opposition Social Democratic Party, or PSD, said he would be willing to run for president in the 2009 elections if the party fails to find another candidate.

“The party will decide the candidate to run against president Basescu in the upcoming elections. If needed, I am ready to assume this role,” said Nastase.

The official said that the “continuous harassment he has been subject to for the past three years” makes him the perfect candidate.

Nastase said several times until now that he is willing to run for presidency.

On Friday, the official also said that president Basescu aims to destroy PSD or at least bring it down in order to better control it.

He added that in the last four years, the totalitarian phenomenon gained ground in Romania isolating the country on international level.
