Romania’s EU Accession Negotiator Snaps At Germans On Nokia Issue

Vasile Puscas, former negotiator for Romania’s accession to the EU, said that Christian democrat leaders in German county North Rhine-Westphalia are smearing the skills of Romanian workers and Romanian market conditions, if the Bochum Nokia factory relocates to Romania.

"Beyond proving primitive protectionism and the elusion of free competition principles and mechanisms on the European Union Internal Market, these christian democrat leaders also use emotional arguments, including a smear campaign against the skills of Romanian workers and the market conditions in Romania,” said a press release issued by Puscas Saturday.

According to him, the christian democrat leaders in North Rhine-Westphalia keep pressuring Nokia, regional and state authorities, as well as the international environment, regarding the Nokia decision to open a production facility in central northwest Romania county Cluj.

"The Finnish company decided this investment in Cluj due to the fact that there are highly skilled workers there, appreciated even in Germany, as well as in other EU states, and there is great local and neighboring market potential, which might lead to greater economic competitiveness in the European Union,” Puscas said.

Nokia announced, in March 2007, that it would build a mobile telephone production facility in Romania, the investment being estimated at EUR60 million.
