Lipovenian Church In E Romania Burnt To The Ground

The Lipovenian Church in Romania’s central-eastern county of Piatra Neamt burnt to the ground Friday night due to a short-circuit at a non-insulated cable in the alter, which destroyed old books and icons dating from around 1800.

According to the Neamt Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, the fire was caused by a short-circuit at a non-insulated cable in the alter.

Firefighters used six vehicles to put out the fire and they were also assisted by volunteer firefighters working for the companies on the town’s chemical platform.

The Lipovenian Church was consecrated back in 1924 and it was erected on the place of an ancient wooden chapel from 1853, which burnt down in a fire in 1920.

Piatra Neamt mayor, Gheorghe Stefan, said he would propose the Local Council to earmark a sum of money for the reconstruction of the church.
