The EU official and the prime minister discussed the project for a high speed railway linking Hungarian capital Budapest to Romania’s southeastern city of Constanta on the Black Sea shore.
In the talks, Tariceanu referred to the importance of using EU funds to develop road and rail infrastructure and emphasized Romania’s interest in the Budapest-Constanta high speed rail, which is very important to regional development, the government said in a statement.
"In other words, Romania supports the implementation of satellite navigation programs Egnos and Galileo, which can ensure Europe’s independence in a strategic sector and are part of the objectives set in the Lisbon strategy,” the statement added.
Tariceanu also spoke of the importance and need to have a road infrastructure to link western to eastern Romania, which is not merely of local but of regional proportions, allowing links to the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Russia.
The EU official also met with President Traian Basescu, who said Barrot’s visit to Bucharest could “help the government have a clearer list of priorities”.
