“The number of newly diagnosed cases reached 19,560 in 2007, i.e. a rate of 110.1 cases per one thousand inhabitants. TB mortality rate also reached lower values, to 7.8% in 2006 from 10.7% in 2002,” Nicolaescu said in a press conference.

TB cases in Romania reached a peak in 2002, of 153.1 cases per one thousand inhabitants, Nicolaescu mentioned.

He said TB cases continue to appear in poor regions in the country, such as Moldavia and in the southern counties.

The Ministry of Health will allocate overall funds of nearly 4.3 million lei (EUR1-RON3.7220) for TB programs in Romania.
