Unions demand a minimum wage in the rail sector of RON540 starting April 1, which translates into a 13% increase from the current RON450 granted in December last year,  said union leader Gheorghe Popa.

Initially, unions had demanded a minimum wage in the sector of RON570 as of May 1, or an average 18% raise.

End last week, Orban invited employees’ representatives to a new round of negotiations regarding salary raises. The minister said at that time that if unions want a raise of more than 10%, it needs to be economically justified.

Railroad employees are discontent with the government’s offer for a 10% raise, of which 5% would be granted April and the rest starting October.

The Bucharest mayoralty last week approved the organization of a protest march on Wednesday, March26.
