Cement prices in Romania increased 6-8% since the beginning of the year and further developments depend on potential hikes in production costs, said Wednesday Markus Wirth, general manager of cement maker Holcim Romania.

End January, Wirth estimated cement prices would go up 10-12% this year, at the same rate as in 2007, driven by higher utility prices, higher costs for raw material, taxes and workers.

Swiss Holcim is among the world’s largest cement producers and is present in over 70 countries worldwide.

The cement Romanian market is shared by the local units of Swiss Holcim, French Lafarge and German HeidelbergCement.
