Romania Could Deploy More Troops To Afghanistan If All NATO Members Do – PM

Romania can supplement its troops in Afghanistan by a unit, but such a decision should be accompanied by similar moves from all NATO member states, Romanian Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu said Thursday.

Asked whether Romanian would increase the number of troops deployed in Afghanistan, Tariceanu said: "We have one unit available for that, but we want an increased contribution from Romania to be accompanied by similar contributions from all participants and all NATO members.”
 
The prime minister said he asked the defense minister to present the government with an analysis on the equipment of Romanian troops in Afghanistan right after the NATO summit, to avoid registering victims in operation theaters.
 
"We have 645 troops in Afghanistan and I want to stress the government’s preoccupation to endow our troops with the best equipment, to avoid victims,” Tariceanu said.
 
Romanian defense minister Teodor Melescanu said late Wednesday that according to a ministry evaluation, Romania has the capacity to single-handedly assume responsibility to ensure security in Qalat province, south Afghanistan.
