Thus, 81 senators voted in favor of President Traian Basescu’s request to reexamine the referendum law after the Constitutional Court ruled on its unconstitutionality.

The Court’ s decision allows the President to initiate a national referendum along with the elections, or close to the date of elections.

Based on this decision, Basescu initiated on November 25, 2007, along with the European Parliament elections, a referendum introducing the uninominal voting system.

The law will be subject to vote in the Chamber of Deputies.
